Go for maths and physics, don’t be afraid of them, says Debbie

A YOUNG woman who scored the highest mark in this year’s Leaving Cert physics exam urged students yesterday to embrace science.

Debbie Buckley, 19, from Carrigtwohill in Co Cork, will be honoured by the Institute of Physics in Ireland early next year for her remarkable achievement.

Yesterday, she said younger students should try and get the most out of Science Week events which are running nationwide.

“I think Science Week is a great idea. It’s great for encouraging people, especially girls, towards science subjects. You see really practical and fun examples of science at work,” she said.

As well as the A1 in physics, Debbie scored six other A1s, including in honours maths and chemistry. She got an A2 in her extra subject, applied maths.

The former St Aloysius, Carrigtwohill, student is now one of nine women studying civil engineering in a class of more than 60 men in University College Cork.

She urged secondary school students, and especially girls, to consider opting for science subjects.

“Go for maths and physics. Don’t be afraid of them. Everything can be broken down into logical steps. And there are so many job opportunities, especially for women. I’d recommend it,” she said.

Debbie praised her physics teacher, Dr John Desmond, for helping to bring the subject alive.

Her former principal, Tony Lee, congratulated her.

“This achievement is a testament to the great interest and ability of girls in this school in the field of science and the work of their teachers.”

Meanwhile, Science Week in Cork will conclude tomorrow.

More than 4,500 students have visited the Discovery 2006 showcase event in City Hall during the week.

They have taken part in hundreds of experiments from making slime to building electronic toys.
