Raise legal drinking age to 21, says expert

A SPECIALIST who carried out research into substance abuse among teenagers in Cork and Kerry is urging the Government to raise the legal age for smoking and drinking to 21.

Dr Tim Jackson, a specialist in public health medicine, also wants a considerable rise in the price of alcohol to put it out of the reach of younger teenagers.

His comprehensive survey showed a link between early substance abuse and dependency in later life.
