GARDAÍ should not be involved in carrying out investigations for an inquest where gardaí are themselves implicated in the death, according to the State’s human rights body.

The Irish Human Rights Commission (IHRC) said coroners should be able to use their own officers to conduct such investigations.

The IHRC made the recommendation in its submission on the Coroner’s Bill, which sets out to reform and strengthen the country’s inquest system.
