Hospital investigates grim discovery of extra organs in post mortem

Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital said disciplinary proceedings could follow an internal investigation into the incident.

The grim discovery was made when the body of Louie Selo, 55, underwent a second post mortem when it was returned to England for burial.

The extra organs were found in a plastic viscera bag within the remains during the procedure.

It is understood they belonged to an Irish person and were returned and buried in a religious ceremony.

“This has been extremely distressing for both families and we have expressed deep regret. It should never have happened. No member of staff has been suspended, but the investigation could lead to disciplinary action,” a spokesman for the hospital said.

Father of three, Mr Selo, a banking analyst from Surrey, England, died of a heart attack in a taxi at Dublin Airport on August 2.

A post mortem was then carried out at Beaumont Hospital where the extra organs were placed in his remains.

His mother, Laura Selo, said: “The problems with delays after Louie’s body came home to us meant that we could not bury my son until two weeks after he died. It was very distressing to us all.”
