A CIVIL liberties watchdog is “extremely concerned” at EU discussions for new biometric passports which could see Irish children as young as six compulsorily fingerprinted.

The fingerprints could be then shared with other countries through a pan-European database.

The issue is currently under discussion by an ‘Article 6’ committee, made up by representatives of the 25 member countries, and chaired by the European commission in secret.
