Minister unhappy with drug sentences

JUSTICE Minister Michael McDowell yesterday criticised the manner in which judges are failing to impose a mandatory 10-year jail sentences for serious drugs crimes.

Legislation gives judges discretion, in certain circumstances, to lower the mandatory term.

However, the minister said he found it difficult to understand how the judiciary, in about 80% of cases, deviate from the mandatory sentence.
