Carthy family ‘deserves expression of profound regret’

JUSTICE Minister Michael McDowell said the family of John Carthy were clearly entitled to an “expression of profound regret” on behalf of the State over his death.

He was speaking at a graduation ceremony in Templemore where he presented certificates to 142 new gardaí.

The minister said that while the report had identified operational failures in the garda response to Abbeylara, it had also acknowledged officers were faced with a “grave and unique situation” and did their best to resolve it without loss of life.
