THE Government yesterday defeated an opposition effort to shorten the Dáil’s summer recess by three weeks.

The Dáil rose last evening and will not sit again until September 27.

Yesterday morning, Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny proposed that the current term be extended a further week to July 14, and the Dáil return on September 12, meaning the recess would be shortened by three weeks.
