MATURE trees lining an historic city road were “butchered” yesterday for electricity cables.

Residents on Cork’s Wellington Road, a designated area of special character and conservation, were outraged after tree surgeons cut branches out of a number of hornbeam tree tops which had grown around electricity cables.

One tree had to be cut down entirely after workers spotted a large split in the trunk.
