Low-fares Polish airline takes off with two new routes out of Cork

A LOW-FARES Polish airline is planning to launch two new routes out of Cork Airport targeting the region’s growing Polish population.

Low-fares Polish airline takes off with two new routes out of Cork

Centralwings, a subsidiary of LOT Polish Airlines, will begin operations out of Cork to Krakow, in southern Poland, and Wroclaw in the west from October 31 — around the time of schools’ mid-term breaks.

It is estimated that there are up to 66,000 Polish nationals with Irish PPS numbers living in the Munster region with up to 20,000 living in the greater Cork area alone.

The airline will operate two Boeing 737s twice weekly — outbound from Cork on Tuesday and Thursday mornings with inbound flights in the afternoon — until March 2007 at least.

A decision on the future of the route will be made then.

Tickets to Krakow were available on the Centralwings website yesterday priced at €12.99 one-way from Cork with return fares from as low as €1.

The airline already operates out of Dublin, Shannon, London Stanstead, London Gatwick and Edinburgh.

Centralwings also flies into airports across Europe, including Spain, Italy, Greece and Germany.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Tom O’Driscoll, a member of the South West Regional Authority’s Airport Consultative Committee, said their new route out of Cork was a timely boost.

“This airline will not just benefit Polish people who are either living here and want to fly home, or for their relatives in Poland to visit here,” he said.

“It will also provide Irish people with the perfect opportunity to take a mid-week break in Poland. Krakow is a beautiful city.

“It is also a timely boost ahead of Cork’s terminal opening.”

Airport bosses are hoping to open Cork’s new €160 million terminal building to inbound passengers in or around July 10.

It is expected the huge facility will then open on a phased basis with full operations underway, and all operations transferred from the old terminal, by the end of this month.

Centralwings is the second Eastern European airline to launch new routes out of Cork aimed specifically at Poles.

Bulgarian-based Wizz Air, one of Europe’s largest low fares airlines, launched its first Irish route from Cork to Poland last April.

It is due to start operations between Cork and Katowice in southern Poland, from July 14.
