POPULAR television programmes such as Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) and an increased focus on forensic evidence in criminal trials are expected to boost demand for places on a new degree course in computer forensics at Waterford Institute of Technology.

The four-year BSc Hons in applied computing will be introduced in September, and is aimed at meeting the demand for expertise across the public and private sectors in Ireland and overseas.

Dr Mícheál Ó hÉigeartaigh, head of the department of computing, mathematics and & physics at Waterford Institute of Technology said the degree programme is being introduced in response to the growing application of forensic techniques to protect companies and combat unlawful use of technology.
