THE introduction of a tiered driver’s licence system, including measures restricting young drivers’ travelling late at night, could reduce the number of young people involved in night-time collisions by up to 60%, a conference heard yesterday.

Transport Minister Martin Cullen is in favour of revamping the 42-year-old driving test so that learners could gradually work towards getting a full licence.

The minister has asked the Road Safety Authority to consider replacing the once-off examination with a step-by-step programme.
