Sunday ice cream party can’t be licked
RTÉ newscaster Sharon Ní Bheóláin, who kept careful watch as the children enjoyed themselves, confided she also loves ice cream. “What girl doesn’t? The richer and the more calorific the better!”
Recently voted Ireland’s most stylish woman, Sharon was on hand to launch HB Ice Cream Sunday on May 22 in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI).
In its third year, the special Sunday will involve thousands of families, friends and children eating ice cream at parties all over the country.
HB will provide the ice cream and party hosts will collect a suggested donation of €2 for every serving.
All proceeds will go towards the development of DSI’s national resource centre, which employs full-time specialists working in the areas of early intervention, counselling, medical services, education and independence serving all people with Down syndrome.
Last year’s event raised over €327,000 - helped in no small measure by film actor Pierce Brosnan speaking on behalf of DSI and allowing his image on its posters and literature.
Down syndrome affects one in every 546 infants born in Ireland. DSI president Alan Crosbie encouraged as many people as possible around the country to host or attend an ice cream party on May 22.
