The 11-day Cork run is set to sell out by the end of the week after more than 7,000 tickets sold yesterday.

Having previously turned down the chance to stage the hit musical, the Cork Opera House said tickets have been selling fast.

People were queuing throughout the day since 8am to get there hands on one of the 12,000 tickets.

“It’s phenomenal, there have been queues outside the Opera House all day,” said marketing manager Denise Murphy.

“We were absolutely blown away with the response, we’ve never seen anything like it,” she added.

According to the show’s producer, Pat Moylan, she offered to stage the musical as part of Cork’s Capital of Culture in January last year but was turned down by the Opera House.

Ms Murphy said: “We just didn’t have room for I, Keano in last season’s programme but we are absolutely delighted that it’s coming to the Opera House in September.”

Following a series of sold out shows in both the Olympia in Dublin and the IFSC in Killarney the show will start its Cork run on September 14.

Set in ancient Rome, I, Keano tells a fictionalised version of the Irish football team’s experiences in Saipan during the 2002 World Cup. It was co-written by Father Ted creator Arthur Matthews.

The role of Keano will be played by Cobh-native Pat Kinevane and Apres Match star Gary Cooke will play his confidante, Dunphia.

The show’s first run at the Olympia was a complete sell-out and returned by popular demand in April.

The Manchester United star, who made the headlines this weekend following a bust-up with manager Sir Alex Ferguson, has already been to see the show in Dublin.

Following yesterday’s response it’s clear his many Cork supporters will be very glad to see I, Keano make its appearance Leeside.

Tickets are priced at €34.50 and €37.50 for evening shows and €24.50 and €27.50 for matinees.
