Falling goalpost kills boy

A 10-YEAR-OLD boy was killed when a goalpost fell on him as he waited to watch his father play in a football match yesterday.

The youngster, from Dundalk in Co Louth, was hit on the back of the head by the post as he played with other children ahead of a local senior game.

He had travelled to Navan in Co Meath to watch the Meath and District League match between his father’s team, Woodview Celtic, and Navan Town.

He was rushed to Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan with serious head injuries, but died a short time later.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out today.

Gardaí launched an investigation and Health and Safety officials were also due to investigate the accident.
