Gardaí seize arms and drugs in raid

GARDAÍ yesterday seized firearms and a large quantity of drugs in a planned search of a Traveller’s site in west Dublin.

Gardaí seize arms and drugs in raid

Officers found two sawn-off shotguns, an imitation handgun and up to 5kgs of cannabis, with an estimated street value of around €15,000.

The raid at St Philomena’s Court in Ballycoolin, a settled Traveller site, was carried out by detectives attached to Blanchardstown Garda Station as part of Operation Anvil.

Operation Anvil was set up on May 18 by Justice Minister Michael McDowell and Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy to combat gun crime and organised gangs in Dublin.

In yesterday’s raid, gardaí uncovered two sawn-off shotguns, ammunition, an imitation “snub nose” revolver and eight to nine ounce bars of cannabis.

They also confiscated a white substance, which could be cocaine or a cutting agent. It has been sent for forensic examination. Weighing scales were also found.

All the items seized are being forensically examined.

No one was arrested. All items were found on land just outside the site.

The raid is the second time the gang has been hit in little over a month.

On the last occasion, gardaí seized 28 nine-ounce bars, equivalent to around 17kgs of cannabis, with a street value of around €170,000.

Gardaí say Operation Anvil is working well in the greater Blanchardstown area, with no gangland murders since April and just the odd shooting.

Mr McDowell said last month that 420 people had been arrested and 83 firearms seized up to 30 June last under Operation Anvil, and that a number of files had been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
