Six Irish Examiner journalists receive nominations for ESB awards
Editor Tim Vaughan said the fact that the Irish Examiner had such a large number of journalists short-listed for the awards reflected the quality of journalistic talent throughout the newspaper.
“This level of recognition is long overdue and I am especially pleased that we have people short-listed in each of the key areas of the newspaper: news, sport, business and features.”
Mr Vaughan added: “This underlines the breadth of talent in the Irish Examiner. They are a great bunch of people and are part of a very talented team that is constantly striving to produce the best possible newspaper for our readers.”
The Irish Examiner nominees are:
Conor Keane (Business); Caroline O’Doherty, Helen O’Callaghan and Michael O’Farrell (Features); Hugh Farrelly (Sport), and Michael Brennan (Young Journalist of the Year).
The Irish Times received seven nominations and the Irish Independent one.
Paul Daly and Gavin Reardon of the Evening Echo each received nominations in the Regional Sport section.
Other notable nominees include Charlie Bird of RTÉ and Liam Fay of The Sunday Times.
The winner in each category will receive 1,500 and a bronze sculpture designed by Leo Higgins and first presented by the ESB in 1997.
The winner of the overall Journalist of the Year Award will receive, in addition, a cheque for 5,000.
This year a Special Judges’ Award will also be presented to a journalist for his/her outstanding contribution to Irish journalism.
