Man charged over death of breeder

A WATERFORD man spent his 20th birthday behind bars last night, charged in connection with the death of 66-year-old horse breeder, Dick Forristal, on Thursday last.

Anthony Barnes with an address at 197 Clonard Park, Ballybeg, Waterford city, was brought before a special sitting of Waterford District Court on Saturday night.

He is charged with the murder of Dick Forristal at his home at Carrivantry Stud, Carrigavantry, Tramore, Co Waterford.

Det Garda Gerry Howe gave evidence of the arrest, charge and caution of Mr Barnes at 10.51am on Saturday. After caution Mr Barnes said: “It was an accident. I had never any attempt to murder the man.”

No application for bail was made and Judge Gerard Fox-Long remanded the 20-year-old in custody to appear in court again in Waterford on Thursday next, July 28.

A second man, Andrew Halligan of 46 Ardmore Park, Ballybeg, Waterford, was also brought before the special court sitting. He was charged with burglary.

When charged, he said he had nothing to say.

The 21-year-old was remanded in custody to appear before Waterford District Court on July 28.

Three friends of the deceased were among those to attend Saturday night’s hearing which lasted only a few minutes.
