Irish actor streets ahead with Corrie gig
Edward Wilson, whose stage name is Edward MacLiam, has already started filming a number of episodes in Manchester, the first of which will be broadcast on June 29. In the series he will play a vet.
“I’m not sure but I think my character turns out to be gay and has a relationship with Sean Tully. I’m a bit in the dark about it,” Edward yesterday said.
The UCC graduate, who comes from Ballyellis, Mallow, has previously acted in The Bill, Holby City and The Year London Blew Up. He also does a number of voiceovers for radio and television advertisements.
Ironically he shares a link to the only other Cork person to have appeared in Coronation Street, the late Joe Lynch. In the 1970s he played the part of a taxi driver who went out with Elsie Tanner. Lynch had relatives in Ballyellis and often visited the area. “I can remember my mother talking about him calling,” Edward said.
After graduating from UCC in English and history, he went to RADA in 1998 and shares the same agent as stars Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry.
“I’ve already recorded four episodes for Coronation Street. The actors are really very good, they’re really nice people and very accommodating. They’re good craic,” Edward said.
He’s the son of Breda Wilson and his late father, Ted, was a bank manager in Doneraile. Edward used to play GAA and rugby with Mallow.
Unfortunately, his mother isn’t a big soap fan.
“I rarely watch them. I don’t know any of the characters,” Mrs Wilson said, although obviously proud of her son’s achievements.
She said she did meet Corrie character Mavis at a recent dinner to celebrate RADA’s 100th anniversary, which was also attended by Kenneth Brannagh.
