Students can relax as exams come to an end

THE Junior Certificate is finally over, and the last of this year’s Leaving Certificate students will be able to put their feet up this evening.

Students can relax as exams come to an end

Yesterday’s Junior Cert classical studies exam was a very long paper, according to ASTI’s Michael Barry, who said a shorter exam would suit students better. He said some candidates were a little unhappy with questions on the Athenian Acropolis, and they were also surprised to see an illustration in one of the questions.

Leaving Certificate music had almost 4,000 students in the exam halls in the morning and afternoon, with listening and composition papers to be answered.

John Francis Murphy of the ASTI said they were challenging but fair.

“Students were quite happy with both papers, which should encourage more people to take the subject,” he said.

However, he said some students might have found difficulty with the layout of Questions 1 and 3 at higher level.

TUI music spokesperson Anne Maxwell said the higher level listening was well-paced, but that Question 1 on the ordinary level paper required a lot of information. She said most students should have been pleased with the afternoon’s composition papers at both levels.

The higher level engineering exam for Leaving Cert students was student-friendly with nice diagrams.

However, ASTI spokesperson Dr Lawrence Smyth felt one question on restricting the movement of a dislocation might have posed difficulties for some people.

TUI engineering representative Kenny Donagher agreed it was a reasonable paper, but felt the ordinary level exam was slightly harder than normal. He said it was tough on students for whom it was the last day of their exams.

Finally, Italian wrapped up the Junior Cert for almost 400 students yesterday evening.

Margaret O’Shea, TUI subject spokesperson, said the higher level paper was very topical and featured a reading comprehension on Italian football players. She said the ordinary level paper was well laid-out, with interesting topics ranging from Italian singers to recipes.
