Almost half of population unaware of EU Constitution

ALMOST half the Irish population are ignorant of the EU Constitution despite the signing of the document being considered one of the high points of the country’s European Union Presidency.

A survey of 25,000 Europeans has revealed over 45% of Irish people are unaware of the document - substantially higher than the European average of 33%.

With months of ‘yes’ and ‘no’ campaigning ahead, support for the constitution is highest in Italy (72%) and Belgium (70%) and lowest in Cyprus (23%) and Britain (20%). Support in Ireland is just 28%.
