Famine ship to sail despite difficulties

A REPLICA Famine ship which yesterday began its sea trials ahead of the Tall Ships Race in Waterford next week has experienced technical difficulties.

However, those behind the project insist it will be ready for her maiden voyage on Tuesday next.

A sail today out of Wexford for the replica 19th Century Dunbrody Famine Ship was cancelled last night to allow for a second sea trial and works.

The Dunbrody is one of more than 80 tall ships due to take part in the four-day event from July 6-9.

Dunbrody Project chief executive Sean Reidy said while there were problems and the trial started an hour late, he is hopeful the difficulties experienced will all be overcome.

“Her stability looks fine and her performance under power is grand.

“We will go out with the fleet from Waterford on July 9. The others will be going on to Cherbourg. We had never planned to sail with them.”
