Dublin stabbing death leads to full-scale murder investigation
Detectives from Donnybrook garda station yesterday confirmed they were now seeking to establish the last known movements of Croat Eldin Palangic, after the discovery of his body in a flat in Ballsbridge on Tuesday afternoon.
The victim’s naked body was found in the bedroom of his apartment in a building on Pembroke Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
The 38-year-old man is believed to have lived in Ireland for the past 12 years and is understood to have been working as a chef in a restaurant in Blackrock.
A postmortem conducted by the State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, revealed the victim had suffered several fatal stab wounds to the neck and body.
The dead man was discovered by his sister who called to his basement flat at about 4pm on Tuesday afternoon. The woman had become concerned after her brother had failed to contact her during the Christmas holiday period.
She alerted the emergency services to the body and an ambulance crew subsequently notified gardaí about the suspicious nature of the victim’s death.
A Garda forensic team has now conducted a detailed examination of the crime scene as they attempt to piece together the incident which led to the death.
Gardaí yesterday continued their investigation by carrying out house-to-house inquiries along Pembroke Road which contains a mixture of buildings used for business and domestic purposes including a large number of bed-sits.
However, it is believed many of the buildings which would usually be occupied were vacant, as people were absent due to Christmas holidays.
Garda sources indicated neighbours had not reported hearing any signs of disturbance at the premises over the last few days.
However, detectives are working on the theory that the victim’s killer was known to him as there was no sign of forced entry to the flat.
Gardaí have issued a public appeal for help from anyone who knew or worked with Eldin to contact them.
They are particularly anxious to speak to anyone who spoke with the victim in the last few weeks in an effort to establish a possible motive for the attack.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at Donnybrook garda station on 01-6669255.
