THE number of people killed on Irish roads is almost 50 more than this time last year after a weekend which claimed six more lives.

The fatalities mounted despite increased garda presence on the roads in an effort to deter motorists from speeding or drink-driving during the busy approach to Christmas next weekend.

The latest victim was a 30-year-old Limerick man killed in a two-car crash near Galbally on Saturday night. It is understood the man, who was from the area, had only recently married.
