Countdown to tragedy

1.15pm: The out-of-service double decker bus pulls off Wellington Quay after a change of drivers.

Seconds later, the bus swerves out of control and crashes on to the pavement behind the No 66 bus, which is collecting passengers.

The bus careers into people queuing and passers-by before passing the No 66 bus and stopping just in front of it. At least eight people were trapped under the bus.

1.17pm:

The first call is logged at Tara Street Fire Station. Four engines, two rescue units and six ambulances are dispatched to the scene.

1.20pm:

Emergency plan put into operation. Gardaí seal off parts of the city and hospitals clear emergency departments.

1.45pm:

The injured and dead are ferried to three hospitals. Air bags are used to free those trapped underneath the bus.

2.15pm:

Garda forensic teams begin investigation. Area from Ha'Penny Bridge to Capel Street is sealed off.

8.30pm

Buses are removed from the scene to Garda HQ in Phoenix Park for further forensic investigations.
