LOCAL and European election candidates were accused yesterday of abusing laws allowing them to erect campaign posters.

The lack of controls by local authorities on posters was also criticised, by the head of the country's leading anti-litter lobby group, as symptomatic of councils' attitudes to litter.

The election campaigns are officially starting this week, but for the past month candidates have plastered lampposts and the landscape the length and breadth of the country with their posters.
