Child torso murder suspect in further questioning

POLICE in the North have been given extra time to quiz a man arrested in England about a gruesome child killing over 30 years ago.

Child torso murder suspect in further questioning

It was the second time a magistrate had granted police an extra 36 hours to question the 46-year-old suspect who was brought back to Belfast on Monday.

He must now either be charged or released by 8am this morning.

He is being quizzed by detectives about the horrific murder of schoolboy Brian McDermott who disappeared from a playground at Ormeau Park in the south of the city in September 1973.

Nearly a week later the 10-year-old’s mutilated torso and arm were found in the nearby River Lagan.

The discovery, which brought to a halt a massive search for the little boy, shocked the province.

No-one was charged with the killing but six months ago a major reconstruction was staged for the Crimewatch UK television programme to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the murder.

It was that attempt to remind people of the horrors of the killing which led to the suspect being arrested in England.

It is understood he was originally from the same area of east Belfast where Brian lived.
