Man handed in £175,000 to garda station
Gardaí confirmed that a man visited Anglesea Street Garda Station late on Thursday night and gave them £175,000.
Understood to be in his 30s, he was questioned but not arrested.
One garda source said he may have innocently taken the money for investment.
On hearing that gardaí had found a large amount of sterling in Farran, and that some of it may be linked to the Northern Bank robbery, the man immediately decided to hand it over.
Gardaí wouldn’t confirm the exact time the man arrived in Anglesea Street because they want to protect his identity.
It is understood that he is claiming the money was given to him by Ted Cunningham, the man who was arrested at his house at Church View, Farran, at 11am on Thursday.
Mr Cunningham, a financial consultant who has offices in Ballincollig, Co Cork, was arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act after gardaí discovered the £2.3m hidden in the back garden of his house.
The discovery was made shortly after 11am on Thursday, two hours after detectives had raided his offices in Ballincollig and taken away documents.
The money was taken under armed guard to Garda Headquarters in the Phoenix Park yesterday, where it is to be examined by technical experts and members of the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
