Rape Crisis Network wants change in DPP policy

THE Rape Crisis Network Ireland (RCNI) last night accused the Director of Public Prosecutions, James Hamilton, of adding to the hurt of the Holohan family by failing to explain decisions he made in relation to the trial of Wayne O’Donoghue.

The RCNI called on the DPP to review his “no reasons for decisions” policy in the interests of openness and transparency.

The network’s legal co-ordinator Kate Mulkerrins said: “This practice causes great distress to many victims of crime. We deeply regret that the Holohan family have fallen victim to this policy on top of all their other suffering.

“Lessons need to be learned and changes implemented. The DPP prosecutes on the people’s behalf - it is not too much to ask that there are mechanisms through which he can be held accountable in those decisions?”

She said victims of serious crime deserve to know why the DPP takes the decisions he does about their case.
