Leaving Cert students unfazed by first Irish paper

THE Leaving Certificate students of North Monastery Secondary School in Cork were generally unfazed by their first Irish paper yesterday afternoon.

William Twomey said the ordinary level paper was a bit tricky, with one of the letter questions being a bit hard.

Classmate David Mullins was pleased with the paper, having already come through English and maths exams satisfactorily. He is interested in boats and hopes to study marine engineering in Cork Institute of Technology next autumn.

However, the Leaving Certificate is not over for David until after the chemistry exam on Tuesday week, June 21.

Anthony Sherlock found the ordinary level paper a bit difficult.

“Some of the letter writing questions were tough, they were a bit awkward,” he said.

He hopes to study chemical science at either Cork Institute of Technology or University College Cork, but the Leaving Certificate will be far from his mind when he heads to the Oxegen music festival in Punchestown next month.

Robert Cunningham, a student at the nearby Gaelcholáiste Mhuire said the ordinary level paper was pretty easy, although a few parts, such as the conversation question, were hard.
