EU scheme sees Irish good sports honoured with awards

Minister for Sport John O'Donoghue presented the Kenmare Special Needs Group and the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service with awards to mark their efforts during last year's European Year of Education through Sport (EYES) initiative.

The other winners were the Mitchelstown Community Games, the Clonroche/ Poulpeasty Community Games, in Enniscorthy, the New Life for Youth group, in Darndale, Dublin and the Summerhill Active Retirement Group from Meath.

Coláiste Choilm in Ballincollig, Co Cork, won the award for Ireland's most sporting school.

The groups were involved in physical activities including soccer, hurling, dance and movement therapy and the World and European Senior Games.

Mr O'Donoghue said their work leaves a physical fitness legacy for Ireland.

"I firmly believe it is vital to look at ways of establishing a legacy that would see the aims of EYES 2004 carried through into the future," he said.
