Man’s legs broken in sledgehammer attack

A gang of masked men burst into a house at 2.15am in Manor Avenue, Bangor, before attacking the 44-year-old victim. They then made off in a white car.

Police found a white Ford Escort on fire in Drumhirk Drive in the nearby Kilcooley estate shortly after the paramilitary-style attack.

Officers arrested one man near the scene of the fire and were questioning him about the beating. Police have also appealed for information about another man who was seen running off.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries, which also included a fractured wrist.

Police say they believe loyalist paramilitaries were responsible for the sledgehammer attack.

The man’s family said that they were “shocked” by the incident.

Detectives say they are keeping an open mind on the motive for the attack.

They want to speak to anyone who saw the car being set alight, or who witnessed the other man escaping in the direction of Ballyroe Gardens.
