Men quizzed over cocaine seizures

Officers from the Revenue’s Customs service seized three kilos of cocaine at Dublin Airport on Wednesday.

The drugs, with an estimated street value of €300,000, were found during a search of a German national.

The 40-year-old man was stopped after he got off a flight from Amsterdam.

Customs officers said the cocaine was concealed in the man’s clothing.

The drugs were confiscated and the man was brought to nearby Santry Garda Station.

Officers from the Santry Drugs Unit took custody of the suspect and detained him under the Drug Trafficking Act.

A spokesman at Santry Garda Station yesterday said they were still questioning the man.

The seizure is the latest in a regular flow of cocaine hauls at Dublin Airport.

Last week, Customs officers seized 1.25kgs of the drug after they stopped an Angolan national who had flown from Montego Bay, Jamaica, via Heathrow, to Dublin.

The 24-year-old had concealed the cocaine inside his body. He was also brought to Santry Garda Station for questioning. Meanwhile, gardaí in Carlow were yesterday questioning a young man following a large seizure of cocaine in the town.

Officers from the local drugs unit discovered half a kilo of the drug during a raid on a house.

Gardaí estimate the street value of the cocaine to be €100,000, suggesting it is of high purity.

The raid, which took place at 10.30pm at a house in Dereen Heights, is understood to have followed a surveillance operation.

One man in his 20s was arrested and brought to Carlow Garda Station, where he was detained under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act.
