EARLY risers who paid homage to the most important meal of the day — breakfast — were honoured yesterday.

Winners in the Ready Brek and Irish Countrywomen's Association children's competition were announced at a grand ceremony at the Croke Park Conference Centre.

Aedemmair Dunleavy, 7, from Parklands, Castlebar, Co Mayo won the first and second class category with her lovely painting of a family breakfast.

In the third and fourth class section children had to write a short story starting with the sentence "I ate my bowl of Ready Brek, felt a warm glow inside me and knew I was ready to"

Patricia Doran, 9, from Camross, Taghmon, Co Wexford, beat off some stiff competition to win the overall prize in this section.

Mark Dunphy, 11, from Raheenvarren, Newbawn, Co Wexford, was another overall winner with his essay entitled, A healthy breakfast means a healthy mind why breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

RTÉ presenter and artist, Don Conroy presented the 78 finalists, who ranged in age from 5 to 12 years, with special certificates.

"Our overall aim is to promote creativity and learning, whilst ensuring the growth of healthy minds and bodies," Weetabix Marketing Manager, Terry Tierney said,

ICA president Breda Raggett said: "The standard of entries from children all over the country was outstanding".

All finalists received a certificate and a Ready Brek gift pack. The national winners each won a special certificate and prizes.
