Bodies of elderly couple found in farmhouse
The remains of the elderly couple’s dog were also found at the scene.
Gardaí found no indication of forced entry to the house in Kilmacar, Ballyragget, nor did they find any obvious sign of injury to the couple, believed to have been in their 60s.
Officers were unable to say last night what the causes of death may have been. They will continue their investigation today as they await the post mortem results.
But there were suggestions that the couple had died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The gardaí were alerted around 3.30pm after a public health nurse had called to the isolated farm and discovered the bodies.
One corpse was found downstairs, the other upstairs.
Officers were last night sealing off the area to allow for a full technical examination, and the bodies were later removed to Waterford General Hospital for today’s post mortems.
Gardaí do not believe the bodies were there for a significant length of time.
It is thought the couple had been seen by locals earlier that morning, although gardaí were unable to confirm this last night.
State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy will carry out the post mortems.
The deceased couple will not be named until all relatives have been informed.
Though their house was in a remote part of the parish, the couple would have been well known to many locals.
Kilmacar has a population of a few hundred people.
