Service for man found in freezer
Immediate family, friends and neighbours of Michael ‘Danzer’ Ahern attended the rosary at O’Connor Funeral Home, North Gate bridge.
In what turned out to be a low-profile ceremony, the prayers and blessing were said by Fr John Manley, Church of the Ascension, Gurranabraher.
Mr Ahern’s remains were flown back to his native Cork yesterday.
There was no obvious garda presence at last night’s removal, but it was thought to have been under surveillance by plain clothes detectives. Danzer Ahern is survived by his teenage sons Daniel and Stephen, mother Lily and sisters Catherine and Christine.
His funeral to St Catherine’s Cemetery, Kilcully, will take place today after 11am requiem Mass at the Church of the Ascension, Gurranabraher.
His body was discovered by police in the Orada complex in Albufeira in the Algarve on September 15.
The 38-year-old man, originally from Churchfield Green, Gurranabraher, had been shot four times in the right side of his head at point-blank range in what is believed to have been a killing by a drugs gang.
Police investigating the murder in Portugal believe the death was the latest in a violent clash between rival drug gangs.
Because of the severity of the beating which he received before being shot, police in Portugal had to access garda fingerprint files in order to make a positive identification of Ahern’s body.
The amateur boxer held a number of convictions for drugs offences. Ahern left Ireland eight years ago, living in Holland and Spain initially, before setting up permanent residence in Portugal last January.
He was born in Bweeng, near Mallow, but spent much of his adult life in Churchfield in Cork city.
He was known to be associated with one of the city’s most powerful drug gangs before setting up his own drugs operation.
He was well known to gardaí and had been sought in connection with a serious drugs matter and an assault.
