PEOPLE convicted of crimes but who avoid jail sentences should have a sample of their DNA stored on a database, the Director of Public Prosecutions said at the weekend.

Speaking at the National Prosecutors Conference, James Hamilton said many people convicted of serious offences received suspended sentences and they should have their samples taken and stored.

A draft paper published by the Law Reform Commission proposes the database should only cover persons sent to prison. Its final recommendations are due in the autumn after which the minister for justice plans to draw up legislation.
