Malice ruled out as house fire victim named
He was 43, single, unemployed and originally from Connolly Road in Ballyphehane.
It is believed Mr Carmody may have been trying to light a fire to stay warm.
The two-storey farmhouse where the blaze broke out is just yards from the Kinsale Road roundabout but is located off the main road to Cork Airport.
The farmhouse, owned originally by two bachelor brothers, is used regularly by homeless people for shelter.
Gardaí said preliminary forensic investigations suggest there is nothing to indicate the fire was started maliciously.
“This appears to have been a tragic accident,” a garda spokesman said.
The results of a post mortem were not available last night.
Emergency services were alerted to the blaze by a passerby just after 9.30pm on Wednesday. Three units of the city fire brigade responded.
“The house was difficult to get at,” assistant fire chief Seamus Coughlan said.
“The gate was locked at the entrance. The laneway down to the house was overgrown.”
Firefighters found Mr Carmody in a downstairs room.
Fire damage was confined to that room, the hallway and part of the stairs.
Mr Carmody had suffered severe burns and was alive but unconscious when firefighters found him. He was rushed to Cork University Hospital but died three hours later.
