Probe into innocent man’s confession

JUSTICE Minister Michael McDowell is to appoint counsel to probe how innocent man Dean Lyons was wrongfully charged with one of two brutal murders in Grangegorman, Co Dublin, in 1997.

Probe into innocent man’s confession

The outside counsel will be asked to examine “how Mr Lyons came to make a confession to a crime which he did not commit,” Mr McDowell told the Dáil yesterday.

He said that important details of the murders contained in Mr Lyons’ statement, which could only have been known to the gardaí and the killer, was a “grave issue” to be examined. The counsel’s report may lead to a public inquiry into the gardaí’s handling of the investigation, although Mr McDowell yesterday indicated he would have reservations about this, as the investigation is not closed.
