ANYONE earning more than €250,000 should be forced to pay 15% tax on all income before any tax allowances can be claimed, says a leading economist.

Speaking at SIPTU’s Dublin regional conference in Croke Park yesterday, Paul Tansey said taxation policy overwhelmingly favoured the rich, creating a major source of inequality.

“I am no proponent of raising income tax rates. But for reasons both of equity and transparency, it is important that individuals, and especially high earners, are seen to make a contribution to the community,” said Mr Tansey, an economist with financial consultants Tansey Webster Stewart & Company.
