Critically ill assault victim had heart attack after his ordeal

The man, in his 40s and from the Coolock area of the north city, was discovered in a serious condition lying on the ground near the Greendale Shopping Centre in nearby Kilbarrack at 1.35am yesterday morning.

An ambulance was called to the scene but gardaí who also attended received information that the victim had been attacked a short time earlier. He had suffered severe head injuries and was taken to Beaumont Hospital.

Gardaí at Raheny station are trying to piece together the sequence of events that led to the man's injuries and have appealed for assistance from witnesses who may have seen an incident in the vicinity of the shopping centre around 1am or elsewhere in Kilbarrack earlier in the night.

They are also examining video footage from security cameras in shops and offices at the centre to see if they picked up any suspicious activity. The victim has been unable to provide any assistance in identifying his attackers so far.

Meanwhile Garda in Kilmainham are appealing for help in identifying a man found dead by a passer-by at Merchant's Quay close to the city centre at 6am last Friday morning. A post mortem was carried out on the man but the cause of his death is not yet known.

He is described as being 25-35 years old, six feet five inches tall, of heavy build and weighing around 20 stone. He had short reddish hair, a round face, was unshaven and had a slight goatee beard.

He also had a tattoo on his upper left arm comprising a small symbol and the name “Symone”. A small surgical scar between the thumb and palm of his left hand together with a bandage found in his pocket led gardaí to speculate that he may have recently worn a sling. His clothing included blue tracksuit bottoms, a red zip top and a dark t-shirt.

Information in both cases can be given to any garda station.
