MDU claim mischievous, say consultants
The Department of Health also reacted angrily to the MDU’s declaration that the department had “finally acknowledged” its rightful responsibility for historic claims.
“The department has not agreed to take responsibility for the MDU’s historic liabilities,” a department spokesperson said yesterday.
“Both the Irish Hospital Consultants Association (IHCA) and the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) have been advised that the department intends to pursue a clear legal strategy in order to ensure that the MDU fulfils its responsibilities,” he said.
Last month, the IHCA, which has 1,750 members, decided to defer industrial action after the Government guaranteed no consultant refused assistance by the MDU would be left exposed if sued.
Last Monday, the IMO, which has 680 consultant members, decided to defer their threatened strike for a further two months.
IHCA secretary general Finbarr Fitzpatrick said the purpose of the MDU’s statement was to cause problems and it was mischievous in its intent.
“We do not accept that the MDU is relieved of its obligations to its members. Members paid money down through the years in return for a service when they needed it from the MDU.
“The MDU’s statement is an attempt to cause uncertainty and dissent and to creep out from under its own obligations,” he said.
