The finger was discovered in the Ronanstown area of west Dublin on Tuesday.
A garda spokeswoman said: “Gardai from Ronanstown are investigating the discovery of a severed finger in the Clondalkin area of Dublin last Tuesday, April 6.”
She said the finger was found by a passer-by on a footpath in Neilstown. She added that the finger appeared to belong to a male.
The severed finger is currently being held in the city morgue.
Gardaí have asked any person with information in connection with the incident to contact Ronanstown Garda Station at 01-6667700 or any garda station.

Two men, with Dublin accents, and wearing blue boiler suits and balaclavas, held up staff and customers shortly after the post office opened at 9.25am. One of the raiders was armed with a shotgun and the other had a sledgehammer.
A quantity of cash was stolen along with the purses of two customers.
No shots were fired and nobody was injured during the raid. The raiders escaped from the scene in a Silver VW Passat which went in the direction of Blackwater.
