Taking a stand for the locality

A SENSE of gratitude and a feeling of belonging is one of the more unusual motives offered by a candidate in the upcoming local elections for their decision to face public approval or rejection.

Taking a stand for the locality

Nevertheless, it is that strong idea of community that has prompted former asylum seeker Taiwo Matthew to stand for election in his adopted home of Ennis, Co Clare, next month. The 42-year-old father-of-three, who has been actively involved in politics since his student days in his native Nigeria, is preparing for the cut and thrust of political debate Irish-style.

Matthew, a medical doctor currently engaged in post-graduate studies, decided to stand for election in the firm belief it was one of the best ways to repay the kindness shown him and his family since they arrived in Ennis five years ago. He hopes his election would reflect the multi-cultural and multi- racial face of modern Ireland, as well as helping to eliminate prejudice.
