Chocolate lovers urged to be eggstra careful with packaging
That is the message from the Repak Easter Recycling Drive, designed to stop waste from millions of Easter eggs going to the country’s landfill sites.
More than five million Easter eggs are bought around Ireland, but only 20% of packaging waste from household bins is currently recycled.
The campaign organised by Repak, an industry-led scheme, hopes the 42% of householders with direct access to green bin collection will use the facility for their used Easter packaging.
Repak marketing manager Darrell Crowe said there is a dramatic increase in packaging waste around this time every year.
“It’s not just from Easter eggs but, also, with the pubs closing on Good Friday and many people partying at home, there’s a huge increase in the number of aluminium cans and glass and plastic bottles sold over the Easter period,” he said.
“We are asking people to recycle their used packaging and not let the hangover from Easter lead to increased landfill,” Mr Crowe said.
