Firms help fund races

Just days after the Government confirmed it is grant aiding Waterford to the tune of E240,000 for the start of the Tall Ships Races 2005, local businesses have also thrown the event a major lifeline.

Mayor of Waterford Seamus Ryan last night paid tribute to the businesses who have committed the money.

A total of 33 companies have joined the Patrons’ Programme.

“While Waterford City Council, the Port of Waterford and Fáilte Ireland have already committed significant funding, it has been clear from the outset that the full cost of hosting this massive international gathering could not be borne by the public sector.

“Given this, I would like to acknowledge and formally recognise the support now being provided by those private enterprises that have signed up for the Patrons’ Programme.

“There is a real sense of excitement building up at this stage as the summer comes closer and it is important that we recognise as a city what a massive and unique opportunity that The Tall Ships’ Races present ,” Mr Ryan said.

Among the 12 gold patrons who committed 15,000 each are Bank of Ireland; Bausch & Lomb; David Flynn Ltd; Fewer Harrington Lawlor & Partners; Frisby Construction; Genzyme; Maritana Gate developers; Nolan Ryan Partnership; Peter O’Connor & Son Solicitors; South East Regional Airport (Waterford); George Wadding Construction and James F Wallace & Co Chartered Accountants.
