Taxi drivers pay tribute to victim of joyriders

TAXI DRIVERS turned out in large numbers yesterday in honour of colleague Robert McGowan, who lost his life at the hands of joyriders.

One of Dublin’s largest churches, Our Lady of Good Counsel in Drimnagh, was at capacity as the entire community mourned the tragic passing of the young father.

Partner Debbie hugged the couple’s son, Daniel, aged two, in a tearful farewell. Neighbours comforted Robert’s parents, Paddy and Rita McGowan, whose lives were shattered by last weekend’s horrific early morning smash.

A stolen Honda Integra ploughed at high speed into Robert’s Nissan Primera at the junction of Summerhill and Portland Road. Vinny Kearns, vice-president of the National Taxi Drivers Union, said last night the organisation is seeking a meeting next week with Justice Minister Michael McDowell.

“Driver safety is our main concern,” he said. “We want assurances from the minister that taxi drivers can go about their normal day-to-day business without the risk of loss of life from ruthless joyriders.”

Mr Kearns said: “I’m a Drimnagh man, myself, and I was very proud to see the church packed in a tribute to Robert and to see people from every corner of district.

“The large attendance demonstrated the respect people held for Robert and we hope that offered some solace to his heartbroken family,” he said.

Offering condolences on behalf of the community to Robert’s family circle, Fr Martin Cosgrove said the taxi driver had been tragically and suddenly snatched from life as he went about making his living.

Robert, 30, who also worked part-time in a factory in Blanchardstown, had revealed to his family his fear of working nights in the taxi business.

He had planned to buy a wheelchair accessible van and switch to a day shift.

His mother Rita said: “All he cared about was making enough money for Debbie and Daniel.”

A Galty Road neighbour of the McGowan family, Linda Long said yesterday: “Everyone remains devastated around here. He was really kind and would do anything to help people.”
