THE British Government refused Ikea permission for a massive store on Manchester’s ring road six months ago because it would generate too much traffic and kill off traditional town centres.

In turning down the request, Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott said the site chosen by the furniture giant on the M60 ring road offered no genuine choice of alternatives to the car.

Mr Prescott’s body blow to the expansion plans of Ikea in Britain - where it already has 11 stores - was yesterday strongly endorsed by Green Party TD Eamon Ryan.
