A PHOTOGRAPHER who took the nation by storm with his striking Seven Shades of Black exhibition is putting the finishing touches to a new show ahead of the Tall Ships Race in his native Waterford.

Terry Murphy is about to launch his Enchanted Coastline exhibition, a compilation of colour and black and white prints from the coast of Waterford.

“For this exhibition, I have been concentrating on the varied coastline of Waterford. Half the pictures are in colour, half black and white,” he said.

“The long exposures give a mystical effect. The long exposures mean that the rock and headlands remain pin sharp but the sea is like a veil. They create a strange, mystical impact. For the black and white shots, I concentrated on stark, woody conditions,” he said.

The photographer is renowned for capturing dramatic, dark skies and angry seas.

“I hope the photographs in this exhibition will be attractive to those who come for the Tall Ships Race, many of whom will be from sea-faring stock.”

All prints in the exhibition will be for sale. The exhibition opens at the gallery at Waterford Treasures on the Quay on June 22 and runs for three weeks. The official opening will be on July 4.

Mr Murphy, who has lived in Waterford all his life, hopes that some crew members from some of the Tall Ships which arrive into Waterford ahead of the Tall Ships Race from July 6 to 9 will attend the launch.

While focusing a lot on the Waterford coastline, Mr Murphy is also busy with his bread and butter work, commercial and studio photography.

“Landscape has always been a hobby though and its great to have an opportunity to show my work at such a special time in Waterford’s history.”

Details of his other work are included on www. sevenshadesofblack.com
