Kerry supporters on air for final
Though the majority of fans will go by train, bus and car, the half-hour air trip is seen by some as the ideal way to avoid inevitable traffic jams.
The 66-seater Aer Arann and 130-seater Ryanair planes are being chartered by Kerry Holidays and Slattery Travel, Tralee, and both companies expect to sell all seats. Tickets cost 200. Basil Sheerin of Kerry Holidays yesterday said the first of their two Aer Arann flights had been sold out and he expected the remainder to be snapped up soon.
It was a similar story with David Slattery, of Slattery Travel, who said that they still had a handful of seats left.
“Going by air cuts out a lot of the hassle that’s involved in travelling to big matches and we would regard the ticket prices as being reasonable,’’ Mr Slattery said.
Meanwhile, Iarnrod Eireann will be transporting 14,400 fans on 38 trains from Kerry and Cork over the weekend. Seven extra trains are being provided and passengers will need control cards in addition to their rail tickets. Tickets went on sale on Thursday morning and, according to Iarnrod business development manager, Andrew Roche, everyone who queued got a ticket.
“Some tickets are still left, mainly for trains which leave on Saturday and return on Monday. Demand overall was quieter than usual, probably because the tickets went on sale a week earlier,’’ he said.
Kerry fans could purchase a maximum of four tickets per person for the special trains to Connolly Station on Sunday.
